Personally I am a big fan of BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) and it is this feature that keeps me loyal to the BlackBerry, even though I am slightly swayed towards the I-Phone.
According to recent news stories regarding the London Riots, meeting points are being established via BBM. Status updates and tweets can be tracked by authorities but BBM is a free, private social network where messages are encrypted when they leave the sender's phone, making it a perfect means of communication for the thugs and a dreaded phenomenon for the police and governmental authorities.
BlackBerry and other social networks cannot be held responsible for the riots. Pathetic, greedy opportunists are exploiting the service offered by BlackBerry for their own personal gain whilst destroying local communities. The mobile phone producer is helping the police with their investigations by tracking sent messages to unlock who is sending the messages; the problem being that messages can only be decrypted once sent and after the event so it seems that prevention is unlikely.
The country is shocked and outraged by the recent London Riots which seem to be dispersing throughout the country to cities such as Birmingham and Bristol. Foreign nationals claim that if riots broke out in their former countries, the looters would be shot by the police. It seems that a similar approach needs to be taken in this country for the authorities to be taken seriously.
